Smart Guitar Practice routines - Stay in your comfort zone

Building a good practice regimen

When guitar students seek guidance in creating an effective guitar practice routine, guitar teachers sometimes rely too heavily on clichés such as "No pain, no gain" or "get out of your comfort zone."

While these pieces of advice have gained popularity because they often hold true, they are not always applicable!

"Practice at a difficulty level where you can play flawlessly and comfortably. As you continue practicing at this level, your comfort zone will expand."

The key to effective practice routines

When it comes to developing muscle memory and improvisation skills, improvement is achieved through repetition. However, it is important to note that not all types of repetition are effective.

Simply playing the correct notes repeatedly is not enough! You must also focus on playing them with a natural and effortless feel. If you practice while tense, you are actually forming a habit of playing with tension 😳.

Based on my 20+ years of teaching experience, I have found that most guitar students need to slow down. They should establish a habit of playing in a relaxed and effortless manner.

So here's my advice: When constructing your guitar practice routine, stay within your comfort zone!

Practice at a difficulty level where you can play flawlessly and comfortably. As you continue practicing at this level, your comfort zone will expand.

Once that happens, you can gradually increase the difficulty level. This will enable you to play faster and more complex music without straining. Ultimately, this approach will help you maintain a musical and creative playing style 💪😎🎸.
